Firesuite have been setting their own agenda for a little while now; haunting the edges of the Blogosphere and carrying out stealth raids on local venues with their explosive live performances - a super cool secret for those in the know. "You're An Ocean Deep, My Brother" deserves to put them right at the centre of the action.
Nothing you have heard so far from the Sheffield quartet will have prepared you for this shift in gear.
"You're An Ocean Deep, My Brother" is a thrilling ride, packed with emotional intensity. "Stay" waxes and wanes with the lonely resonance of Jane's Addiction's "Classic Girl", instrumental "Sci-fi Lullaby" throbs like Vanishing Point-era Primal Scream surrendered in oceanic bliss to the edgy atmospherics of A.R. Kane, and the supernova shoegaze of "Amity" is just enormous.
Lyrically there is a preoccupation with time, dreaming and loss.
The Pumpkins-esque euphoria of "Blushed and Bruised" gives way to the frail and faltering pulse of the the final track "Forever December"; guitars scratch and scrape, then sparkle and fade, exhausted and impoverished the singer pleads: "how long will you stay awake?".
There must be a deep sadness at the heart of this music: a soulful, reflective ache which, by means of a delicate Zen-like balance, never once gives in to bad old-fashioned angst.
A beautiful, life-affirming listen.
